Junghee Sohn
Junghee Sohn is a ceramic sculptor based in Seoul, Korea. She graduated with a B.A. in Art History from Barnard College, NY and a Masters in Ceramic Arts from Hong-Ik University, Seoul. Her work is whimsical yet somber at the same time. A true homage to dark comedy, she offers a bold and unapologetic take on classic themes.
"I started working with clay a decade ago and instantly fell in love with the malleable quality of the material. With the flick of a thumb, a muscle or a flab of fat is formed. It gave me a god-like satisfaction in creating beings that speak their own stories. I do not aim for perfect beauties, but beings that are slightly grotesque and imperfect in many ways," said Sohn in a magazine interview in 2011. She added, "Sculpting is a way to express myself freely in a world where decorum prevents me from doing so. It lets me express the base human emotions. I do not try to convey a social message in my works. I just want to express my personal perception of human nature."
